<![CDATA[ <p>Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/imran-khan-arrested-former-pakistan-pm-imran-khan-imran-khan-arrested-outside-islamabad-court-4018543">was arrested today</a> just as he was entering the Islamabad High Court for a hearing in one of dozens of cases pending since he was ousted from office last year. The 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician was taken into custody from the court premises by paramilitary forces; leaders from his party, Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have alleged that the police entered the court, smashed the glass window of the room where his biometric data was being taken, and dragged him outside. The arrest comes a day after the country's powerful army had accused Mr Khan of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.</p> <p>Imran Khan was arrested in <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/imran-khan-arrested-case-against-ex-pak-pm-explained-in-5-points-4018782">the Qadir Trust case</a> (which concerns allegations that Bahria Town allotted land worth millions to Al-Qadir Trust, owned by the PTI chairman Mr Khan and his wife), Islamabad Police tweeted in Urdu, adding that the situation is "normal". However, The dramatic manner of the arrest has many questioning if the arrest was on the merits of the case alone.</p> <p>"Section 144 is in force and action will be taken in case of violation," Islamabad police warned as PTI called for supporters to take to the streets in protest.</p> <p>Pakistan Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah tweeted that Imran Khan had failed to appear before the court despite being issued several notices. "The arrest has been conducted by the National Accountability Bureau for causing losses to the national treasury. He is also involved in the killing of (TV anchor) Arshad Sharif. Videos from the spot showed them chanting "Release Imran Khan," and "Shut down Pakistan" slogans.</p> <p>The PTI urged its supporters to protest, tweeting this is a "now or never opportunity.</p> ]]>

When there is an alliance with another party, it is imperative to provide strength to that party. But, as we were starting from scratch, it was not possible to give the assurance that we would be able to provide strength if we go with them," he said.</p> <p>Mr Pawar said his party is contesting limited seats in Karnataka and ensuring that it will not adversely affect the Congress's prospects.</p> <p>Asked about slogans like "Bajrangbali ki Jai" raised by some political leaders during the Karnataka poll campaign, Sharad Pawar claimed that seeking votes in the name of caste and religion is in breach of the oath taken by a person after becoming an elected representative, as secularism and democracy are key words in the oath. "I am surprised that the country's prime minister puts forth this kind of a stand before the people. You (the government) should tell me what you have done in the last five years as the power was in your hands. Outside the temperature is a freezing -8C on a clear December day, but inside the greenhouse the thermometer clocks in around 36C.</p> <p>Nakagawa has been growing mangoes in the snowy Tokachi region of Japan's northernmost island since 2011. He sells them for as much as $230 each. He never thought an experiment in sustainable farming would one day yield the world's most expensive mangoes.</p> <p>"At first no one took me seriously," says the 62-year-old Nakagawa, who had previously run a petroleum company. "From here in Hokkaido, I wanted to create something natural out of nature."</p> <p>Nakagawa switched to mango cultivation following years in the oil business, where surging prices convinced him of the need to look beyond fossil fuels. Under the guidance of another mango farmer from the southern prefecture of Miyazaki, who claimed it was feasible to grow the fruit in winter months, Nakagawa founded his farm and established his startup Noraworks Japan. A few years later he trademarked his mango brand as Hakugin no Taiyo, which translates to "Sun in the Snow."</p> <p>Nakagawa's secret is using the two natural resources his homeland of Hokkaido is famous for—snow and onsen hot springs. He stores snow from the winter months and uses it in the summer to cool his greenhouses, tricking the fruits into delaying blooming. Then in the winter he uses natural hot springs to warm the greenhouse and harvest roughly 5,000 mangoes out of season.</p> <p>The process allows the mangoes to ripen during the cooler months when few insects are around, which means no use of pesticides. Hokkaido's low-humidity climate also reduces the need for mold-removing chemicals. Plus, harvesting in the winter—when farmers have less work—allows better access to labor at a time when Japan faces a worker shortage, particularly in rural areas.</p> <p>The sustainable approach is just an added bonus to the taste, which Nakagawa claims is much sweeter than normal mangoes with a higher sugar content of about 15 degrees brix, and his fruit boasts a buttery smooth texture devoid of stringiness.</p> <p>The novelty factor of how they're produced has intrigued customers and retailers alike. In 2014 the department store Isetan displayed one of his mangoes at its Shinjuku location in Tokyo, and it later sold for almost $400. The eye-popping price for a single mango made headlines, garnering more attention and making it a hard-to-get item. On the official website where customers can place orders, they're often greeted with the words "SOLD OUT" in a big, bold red font.</p> <p>Nakagawa's clients include restaurateurs such as Asia's Best Female Chef 2022 Natsuko Shoji, who uses the fruit in her mango flower cakes. He also has customers overseas and ships his mangoes abroad to high-end retailers, such as City'super in Hong Kong.</p> <p>Since then, Nakagawa has discovered more unexpected benefits of farming in winter. "Because we don't use pesticides, tea company Lupicia has approached me about using our leaves for mango tea," he says, gently patting a tree.</p> <p>Nakagawa isn't satisfied yet. He aims to raise other tropical produce using the same method to turn Tokachi into a fruit production hub in winter and give the local economy a boost. <![CDATA[ <p>Stoking a controversy, Union Minister Satya Pal Singh Baghel claimed that "tolerant Muslims can be counted on fingers" and it too "was a tactic to lead a public life wearing a mask" as it leads to Vice-President, Governor or Vice-Chancellor posts.</p> <p>But the real face of such "so-called intellectuals" from the community gets revealed after they complete their term in office or retire, he alleged.</p> <p>The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice made the comments on Monday while addressing the Dev Rishi Narad Patrakar Samman Samaroh - an event organised by the RSS's media wing Indraprastha Vishwa Samvad Kendra to present awards to journalists.</p> <p>"Tolerant Muslims can be counted on fingers. I think their number is not even in the thousands. And, that too is a tactic to live in public life wearing the mask as the route leads to the house of vice president, governor or vice chancellor," Mr Baghel said.</p> <p>"But when they retire, they give real statements. When they leave the chair, they give a statement which shows their reality," he added.</p> <p>The Union Minister's remarks came after Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, in his speech at the event, said that India must fight Islamic fundamentalism but the "tolerant Muslims should be taken along".</p> <p>Referring to Mughal emperor Akbar's efforts to foster Hindu-Muslim unity during his rule, Mr Mahurkar claimed that Chhatrapati Shivaji had seen him in a "positive light". "Akbar tried his best to achieve Hindu-Muslim unity," he said.</p> <p>Dismissing the remarks, Mr Baghel, however, termed Akbar's efforts mere "tactics" and alleged that the Mughal emperor's marriage with Jodha Bai was part of his "political strategy".</p> <p>"It did not come from his heart. Otherwise, the massacre of Chittorgarh would not have happened," he said, adding "Look at the Mughal period… the deeds of Aurangzeb. Sometimes, I wonder how did we survive." Baghel said India's bad days began in 1192 AD when Muhammad Ghori defeated Rajput King Prithviraj Chouhan.</p> <p>Mr Baghel also raised the issue of religious conversion to allege that the number of people who have been converted to another religion through "gande-tabeez" (amulets) is larger than those under the swords.</p> <p>"Be it Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz Saheb, Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, or Saleem Chisti… Still today, people from our community go there in large numbers seeking children, jobs, tickets (to contest election), ministerial berth, elevation from a minister of state to a cabinet minister," he added.</p> <p>The minister said members of the minority community feel that since they were "rulers" for such a long period, how could they become "subjects".</p> <p>"The solution to the problem lies in providing good quality education. It can give some solution to the problem one day.</p> <p>"If they study in a madrassa, they will learn Urdu, Arabic and Persian. All literature is good but with such study, they will become Pesh-Imam. Go Air's lessors are seeking to repossess 36 aircraft, filings with India's aviation regulator show. </p> <p>Several other parties have also expressed interest in the airport slots, the people said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are confidential. New carrier Akasa Air is among them, one of the people said. </p> <p>The clamor for Go Air's assets may complicate its bid to restructure debt and restart operations. India's aviation regulator told the carrier to stop selling tickets on Monday, reminiscent of when fugitive billionaire Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. was ordered to do the same about a decade ago. It never flew again. A decision is due in two weeks on whether Go Air can keep its operating license.</p> <p>Go Air's biggest lessors include Sky High XCV Leasing Ltd., ACG Aircraft Leasing Ireland Ltd. and SMBC Aviation Capital Ltd.</p> <p>Founded in 2005 by magnate Nusli Wadia, Go Air has said Pratt & Whitney engines on its A320neo aircraft deteriorated faster than expected and prematurely stopped working. The airline said it had to change more than 500 Pratt GTF engines between 2016 and February 2023, forcing planes out of service and leading to losses of 108 billion rupees ($1.3 billion). </p> <p>Pratt, a unit of Raytheon Technologies Corp., has previously said the Go Air matter is being considered by law courts and that it continues to prioritize delivery schedules for customers. </p> <p>Supply disruptions and a faster-than-anticipated travel recovery from the pandemic have resulted in a shortage of new commercial jetliners, so Go Air's troubles present another avenue for the likes of Tata and IndiGo to expand their fleets.</p> <p>Tata took over formerly state-run Air India last year and is integrating its brands, including local ventures of Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Capital A Bhd.'s AirAsia. The flag carrier placed a record order for 470 planes from Airbus and Boeing Co. in February, with deliveries due to start from the end of this year, but supply-chain snags could threaten that timeline. </p> <p>Budget operator IndiGo, managed by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., flew 7.3 million people domestically in March, cornering almost 60% of the Indian market. </p> <p>Given the difficulties in repossessing aircraft in India in the past, lessors would prefer to keep Go Air's idled planes in India, one of the people said. </p> <p>The airline's other lessors include GY Aviation Lease Co. and Pembroke Aircraft leasing Ltd. </p> <p>Representatives for Go Air and Air India didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. <![CDATA[ <p>Football legend <a href="https://sports.ndtv.com/football/players/90996-lionel-messi-playerprofile" title="Lionel Messi">Lionel Messi</a> is all set to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and join a Saudi Arabia-based club, a report has confirmed. Messi had recently made a trip to the Middle Eastern country for which he was handed a suspension but Ligue 1 club. The purpose of Messi's visit wasn't' initially confirmed but it seems like it had something to do with the Argentina legend finalising details of his future during the visit. Messi's current contract with the French giants concludes at the end of next month.</p> <p>"Messi is a done deal. He will play in Saudi Arabia next season," AFP quoted a source as saying. "The contract is exceptional. It's huge. We are just finalising some small details," the source added.</p> <p>Asked about the comments, Messi's current club Paris Saint-Germain simply noted that he remains under contract until June 30.</p> <p>A separate PSG source said: "If the club had wanted to renew his contract, it would have been done earlier."</p> <p>The 35-year-old World Cup winner was suspended by Qatari-owned PSG last week for an unauthorised trip to Saudi, where he is a tourism ambassador.</p> <p>Messi's expected arrival in the oil-rich kingdom follows in the footsteps of his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in a massive deal in January. However, Ronaldo's continuity at Al-Nassr is also surrounded by clouds of uncertainty. It has been reported in the recent weeks that the Portuguese is keen on a return to Europe.</p> <p>Ronaldo's agreement to June 2025 is said to total more than 400 million euros ($439million), making him the world's highest paid athlete according to Forbes. </p> <p><em><strong>With AFP inputs</strong></em></p> ]]>

Of late, many WhatsApp users in India have reported receiving missed calls from unknown international numbers. These calls, both audio and video, often originate from countries like Malaysia, Kenya, and Vietnam, Ethiopia as indicated by the ISD codes given. <![CDATA[ <p>A Malaysian diving instructor was arrested after a 24-year-old Chinese tourist accused him of molesting her while underwater. According to Assistant Superintendent Arif Abdul Razak, the acting officer in charge said that the woman was molested by a 27-year-old man, who was working freelance while diving in waters off Semporna in Sabah state at about 1 pm on Friday, reported South China Morning Post.</p> <p>The incident soon went viral on social media. The pictures feature screenshots of the alleged conversations between the diving instructor and the victim. The accused has been remanded until Thursday to facilitate investigations. </p> <p>Tourism, culture and Environment minister of Sabah- Christina Liew said on Monday that the incident had dented the image of the state's tourism industry just as it was beginning to recover from the pandemic. "Incidents like this greatly affect the image of tourism in the Semporna district in particular, and Sabah in general, even more so as the tourism industry is recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic." </p> <p>“I call on all travel agents in this state to play a role in providing quality service,” she said. “They must be responsible to ensure incidents like this will not happen again.”</p> <p>Sharing details about the incident, the minister revealed that the incident had occurred outside the area of Sipadan Island Park and Tun Sakaran Marine Park which was under the management of Sabah Parks.</p> ]]>

Daksha is the third cheetah to die at the park in around 40 days.</p> <p>"She was immediately given necessary medication and treatment but she died around 12 noon," an official said</p> <p>She may have got injured due to a "violent interaction" during mating with an adult male coalition which included two male cheetahs - Vayu and Agni, said Madhya Pradesh Chief Conservator of Forest JS Chauhan.</p> <p>Daksha was released in enclosure number one and two male cheetahs, Vayu and Agni, were released from boma 7 (enclosure) for mating, but it appears that the male cheetahs turned violent during the process which is a normal thing, he added.</p> <p>Male cheetahs often form coalitions or partnerships with their brothers, or other unrelated males, as it is easier for them to hunt larger prey together. Sometimes, males in a coalition also compete for a female, and the one that dominates gets the opportunity to mate.</p> <p>The autopsy of the cheetah is being carried out by the veterinary team as per the protocol.</p> <p>Twenty cheetahs have been brought to the national park from South Africa since last year under 'Project Cheetah', of which two died in March and April.</p> <p>Cheetahs Sasha' and 'Uday', who were shifted to KNP from Namibia and South Africa in separate batches in September 2022 and later, died on March 27 and April 23, respectively, officials had said.</p> <p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the first batch of eight spotted felines -- five females and three males -- from Namibia into a quarantine enclosure at Kuno in Madhya Pradesh on his 72nd birthday on September 17 last year.</p> <p>In a second such translocation, 12 cheetahs were flown in from South Africa and released into Kuno on February 18.</p> ]]>

<![CDATA[ <p>Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn has bought a huge tract of land on the outskirts of Bengaluru, the key Apple supplier said in a filing Tuesday as it looks to diversify production away from China.</p> <p>Also known by its official name, Hon Hai Precision Industry, Foxconn is the world's biggest contract electronics manufacturer and a principal assembler of Apple iPhones.</p> <p>Both companies are seeking to diversify away from China, where much of their manufacturing is based, after strict Covid policies in recent years and ongoing diplomatic tensions with the United States hurt production.</p> <p>The 1.2 million-square-metre (13 million-square-foot) acquisition in Devanahalli, near the Bengaluru airport, was announced in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.</p> <p>Its subsidiary Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development was paying three billion rupees ($37 million) for the site, it said.</p> <p>Another Foxconn unit was acquiring land use rights to a 480,000-square-metre site in Vietnam's Nghe An province, it added.</p> <p>Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai said in March that Apple would "soon" manufacture iPhones at a new plant in the state, creating "about 100,000 jobs".</p> <p>Bloomberg News reported that month that Foxconn was planning to invest $700 million in a new factory in Karnataka the same month, citing unnamed sources.</p> <p>Foxconn chairman Young Liu visited the state then to "deepen partnerships... and seek cooperation in new areas such as semiconductor development and electric vehicles", he said in a statement.</p> <p>He also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said the pair's "discussions covered various topics aimed at enhancing India's tech and innovation eco-system".</p> <p>Foxconn has manufactured Apple handsets in India since 2019 at its plant in Tamil Nadu.</p> <p>Two other Taiwanese suppliers, Wistron and Pegatron, also manufacture and assemble Apple devices in India.</p> <p>Apple has been making its own push into India and chief executive Tim Cook last month opened its first two retail stores in the world's most populous country.</p> <p>The California-based firm is betting big on the nation of 1.4 billion people -- home to the second-highest number of smartphone users in the world, after China.</p> <p>The world's biggest company in terms of market value is also expanding its manufacturing footprint in India.</p> <p>Apple said last September it would manufacture its latest iPhone 14 in India, just weeks after launching the flagship model.</p> <p>The country last year accounted for seven percent of Apple's iPhone production, according to Bloomberg, lagging behind the United States, China, Japan and other countries.</p> <p>Apple's expanding manufacturing in India is a boost to PM Modi's "Make in India" strategy, under which he has urged foreign businesses to manufacture goods in the South Asian nation.</p> ]]>

<![CDATA[ <p>Sachin Pilot today said Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's leader seemed to be the BJP's Vasundhara Raje and not Sonia Gandhi, making direct hits at his bitter rival just a day before his Congress party faces the crucial Karnataka election.</p> <p>In an all-out attack on Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot said he would not quit the party as he didn't want to ruin its chances ahead of the Rajasthan election later this year. Instead, he announced a "Jan Sangharsh Yatra" from Ajmer to Jaipur to highlight corruption.</p> <p>The riposte followed Ashok Gehlot's stunning remarks last weekend that former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje helped save his government when Sachin Pilot revolted in 2020 along with a few MLAs.</p> <p>"After hearing the Chief Minister's speech in Dholpur, I think his leader is not Sonia Gandhi, but his leader is Vasundhara Raje," Mr Pilot told reporters.</p> <p>"He (Gehlot) alleges that BJP tried to topple his government. Then he says a BJP leader helped save his government. He should explain the contradiction."</p> <p>At the rally on Sunday, the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/ashok-gehlot-credits-vasundhara-raje-for-saving-his-government-during-2020-revolt-4013458">Chief Minister had claimed that Vasundhara Raje</a> and two other BJP leaders helped save his government and that money was given to MLAs to switch to the BJP and topple his government. Mr Gehlot also took a swipe at the MLAs who had rebelled, saying they "should return the money".</p> <p>The comments targeted the BJP as well as his party rival in one stroke.</p> <p>Not mincing words, Mr Pilot accused Mr Gehlot of insulting his own MLAs and harming his own party ahead of the election.</p> <p>"I now understand why no action was taken against corruption by the Vasundhara Raje government despite my repeated requests," Mr Pilot said, accusing Ashok Gehlot of going soft on the BJP because of a secret understanding.</p> <p>The former Deputy Chief Minister said he had tolerated much name-calling and attacks from Mr Gehlot over the past two-and-a-half years. "He called me gaddar (traitor), nikamma (useless), corona…Many insinuations and abuses were directed at me. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to damage the party," he said.</p> <p>He also claimed his yatra was not aimed at Mr Gehlot. "The yatra is not against anyone but is against corruption," he asserted.</p> <p>He also defended his 2020 revolt saying MLAs wanted a leadership change in Rajasthan.</p> <p>The latest round of Gehlot Vs Pilot renews the spotlight on a festering crisis that the Congress has been compelled to handle in an election year.</p> <p>Many believe Mr Pilot is pushing the Congress to act and planning a well-timed exit before the polls.</p> <p>The Gehlot-Pilot feud cropped up soon after the Congress's 2018 victory in Rajasthan, over the chief minister's post.</p> <p>Though Mr Pilot agreed to play second fiddle to the veteran, he revolted in 2020, the year Covid erupted worldwide. He camped for days near Delhi but ended his strike after the Gandhis assured him a solution.</p> <p>The rebellion fizzled out as 100-plus MLAs chose to stay with Mr Gehlot. At no point has Mr Pilot been able to produce more than 20 MLAs in his support, making it tougher for the party to pick a side.</p> <p>Last year, some 70 MLAs resigned in protest against the Congress's move to make Mr Gehlot party president, which would mean his replacement in Rajasthan, possibly by Mr Pilot.</p> <p>Earlier this year, Mr Pilot launched a solo campaign for the Rajasthan polls soon after Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in the state.</p> <p>Mr Gehlot, with his frequent attacks on his former Deputy, has made it clear that he will not stand back.</p> ]]>

<![CDATA[ <p>The Narcotics Control Bureau or NCB has sacked its superintendent Vishwa Vijay Singh, who was part of a team that raided Cordelia Cruise and arrested actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan in 2021, for misconduct in another matter in which he was suspended earlier, officials said.</p> <p>The order about the termination of services of Mr Singh was issued last month, an official said today.</p> <p>Mr Singh was part of the team which raided the Cordelia Cruise and arrested Aryan Khan and others in the 'drugs-on-cruise' case in October 2021.</p> <p>"Vishwa Vijay Singh was removed from NCB's service in another case in which he was suspended last year and an inquiry was going on against him," the official said.</p> <p>He said the NCB found certain issues of misconduct during the inquiry, following which a decision was taken to remove Mr Singh from service.</p> <p>In October 2021, Aryan Khan and others were arrested after a team led by NCB's then-Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede raided Cordelia Cruise at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal.</p> <p>Initially, charges of drug possession, consumption, and trafficking were applied in the case.</p> <p>Aryan Khan, who had spent 22 days in jail, was given a clean chit by NCB in May 2022 due to "lack of sufficient evidence", officials had said.</p> <p>A separate vigilance inquiry was conducted owing to allegations of high-handedness against the NCB team and Mr Wankhede.</p> <p>Departmental action was taken against seven officers in the alleged 'drugs on cruise' case. <![CDATA[ <p>Union minister Amit Shah's visit to Bengal on Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary as the Centrally-run Visva Bharati evicts another Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen, became the lead point of Trinamool Congress attack on the BJP today.</p> <p>Mr Sen shares a special link with Tagore, as does the University. While Visva Bharati grew from a little school Tagore established in Shantineketan, the poet had also bestowed the name "Amartya" to the grandson of a close friend.</p> <p>"Amit Shah comes to pay tribute to Rabindranath but a Nobel laureate, who was named Amartya by Rabindranath Tagore is being served an eviction notice by Visva Bharati,"said Bengal minister Shashi Panja at the state's official programme to mark Tagore's birth anniversary.</p> <p>Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also threw her weight in.</p> <p>"Some people think Shantiniketan is Tagore's birthplace. Some people's rallies end up destroying a statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar," she said, in a jibe directed at BJP chief JP Nadda and Amit Shah.</p> <p>Mr Shah is currently on a visit to Bengal and the first item on his itinerary today was a visit to Tagore's ancestral house in Kolkata's Jorasanko, where he paid floral tributes to the poet.</p> <p>"Earlier they were confused between the janmabhoomi (birthplace) and karmabhoomi (place of work) of Tagore. At least now they know he was born at Jorasanko," Shashi Panja said today in an arch reference to a faux pas by BJP chief JP Nadda.</p> <p>A few years ago, Mr Nadda had mistakenly mentioned Santineketan -- where the Visva Bharati University stands today -- as the poet's birthplace. Today the Chief Minister hinted that the BJP leaders should know about the state instead of reading out misinformation "from a cheat sheet, or a teleprompter".</p> <p>Over the last week, the intelligentsia of the state, as well as the ruling Trinamool Congress, have vocally backed the Amartya Sen, who has been embroiled in a battle with the university over several months.</p> <p>The university claims the land attached to Amartya Sen's ancestral property, Pratichi in Shantineketan, is "illegally occupied". The University has said it would evict the economist if he failed to vacate it within the deadline.</p> <p>Last week, the Calcutta High Court put a freeze against a move by Visva Bharati to take away part of the property.</p> <p></p> ]]>
